Why DSC
Why Learn German
Learning German is important for many reasons, as demonstrated by the list below. In light of one out of every four Americans having German heritage, Goethe’s quote is more apropos then ever:
- German-Americans are the largest ethnic group in America today.
- Germans form the largest single heritage group in the U.S.
- German has an enormous cultural heritage:
- Music: Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Mozart and Brahms.
- Science: Einstein
-
- Literature: Goethe, the Brothers Grimm, Hermann Hesse, Ernst Jünger and Patrick Süskind
- German has the largest number of native speakers in the European Union (far more than English, Spanish, or French).
- Germany has the 3rd strongest economy and is the #1 export nation in the world.
- German is the second most commonly used scientific language.
- Germany is the third largest contributor to research and development and offers research fellowships to scientists from abroad.
Government Agency under the german Federal Office of Administration
It is responsible for overseeing and supporting German schools abroad, as well as providing resources for German language education worldwide. The ZfA works closely with the German Federal Foreign Office and various German cultural and educational institutions to promote the German language and culture in international education.
The ZfA's main responsibilities include:
- Supporting German Schools Abroad: Providing financial, pedagogical, and organizational support to over 140 German schools abroad.
- Promoting German Language Education: Offering assistance to around 1,100 schools with German language programs, including the implementation of the German Language Diploma (Deutsches Sprachdiplom).
- Teacher Placement and Training: Recruiting and training teachers for German schools abroad.
- Curriculum Development: Helping develop and adapt curricula to local conditions while maintaining German educational standards.
The ZfA is essentially a government agency focused on promoting and supporting German education outside of Germany.
Prestigious Language Certification Program
The Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK (DSD), or the German Language Diploma of the KMK, is a language certification program managed by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK), which is the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Key Aspects of the Deutsches Sprachdiplom:
- Language Certification: The DSD is a standardized language diploma that certifies proficiency in the German language. It is offered at two levels:
- DSD I: Certifies German language proficiency at the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- DSD II: Certifies proficiency at the B2/C1 level of the CEFR.
- International Reach: The DSD is available to students worldwide, particularly in schools that are part of the network of German schools abroad or schools that offer intensive German language programs.
- University Admission: The DSD II is often recognized as proof of sufficient German language skills for admission to a German university.
- Support and Administration: The DSD is supported and administered by the KMK in cooperation with the ZfA (Central Agency for Schools Abroad). This ensures that the diploma adheres to high educational standards and is recognized internationally.
In essence, the Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK is not an association but a prestigious certification program under the authority of the KMK, designed to assess and certify German language proficiency for non-native speakers, both in Germany and abroad.
Global Network coordinated with the German Foreign Office.
The PASCH-Initiative, "Schools: Partners for the Future," is a global network of over 2,000 schools where the German language holds significant importance. Coordinated by the German Foreign Office, it is implemented with partners like the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA), the Goethe-Institut, and others. PASCH aims to foster interest in modern Germany and the German language, creating an international learning community through school exchanges and teacher training.
Governmental Cooperative Body
KMK refers to the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK), officially known as the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany. The KMK is a cooperative body representing the 16 federal states (Länder) of Germany in matters of education, higher education, research, cultural affairs, and media policy.
Key Aspects of the KMK:
- Coordination Body: The KMK coordinates policies among the German states to ensure a degree of uniformity in the education system, while respecting the autonomy of each state. This includes harmonizing school curricula, examination standards, and teacher qualifications.
- Policy Development: The KMK develops common policies and frameworks on various educational matters, including teacher education, school and university systems, vocational education, and cultural matters.
- Representation: The KMK represents the interests of the German education system at the national and international levels.
- Cultural Affairs: Beyond education, the KMK also addresses issues related to culture, language policies, and youth education.
The KMK is not an association in the traditional sense but rather a governmental cooperative body that plays a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the standards and policies of Germany's education and cultural systems.
